I am a summer school English teacher right now. The novel I am having my students read is titled "Forbidden City". Right now I am in the process of filling my room with as many pictures and background information as possible on the Tian-na-men Square Massacare of 1989. After reading the book, my eyes were opened. In 1989 I was only 14 years old, and the only thing I remember is the man in front of the tank. Everyone should read "Forbidden City" to discover what things must have really been like over in China at this time!

I was watching a TV programme about self-censorship in the Press tonight, I thought about the loss of freedom in Hong Kong since the handover and what can I, a mere citizen, do to help?

I propose the Free China foundation start a "Statue of Liberty" Enterprise. Its purpose will be to provide a new Statue of Liberty as a *Symbol of Democracy* for China. The French did this for the United States over 100 years ago. The French had a competition for the design (great publicity). They collected small donations from children, students ordinary people (any anyone else, too) to build the parts. The unassembled parts- a *statue-in-waiting*, would symbolize unrealized democracy. The pieces- like a broken demovcracy- would remain ready to ship to China until democracy finally exists there. Could this be unifying symbol and capture folks'imagination? What are your thoughts?

I am watching your press conference on C-SPAN. Expect nothing good from our President! He is an ally of China's military regime! He cares no more for freedom and democracy tahn Deng Xiaoping or Stain! He cares nothing for The Constitution of the United States; he has routinely violated the constitutional rights of many citizens here in the U.S. He has obstructed justice. He even put a Chicago woman in jail just for criticizing him in public! His "town halls" are shams, where any differing view is shouted down! I don't want to buy anything from China, because I have heard that many products are made with slave labor! We are trying to impeach Bill Clinton. He is a traitor, not only to the United States and her people, but to the very ideal of liberty! I fear that if we don't hold our leaders accountable to the law, what hope is there? I read a quote years ago, I don't know the author's name, but it goes, "Peace without justice is tyrranny!"

I will always remember the sight of Tiananmen Square on TV with that one brave man standing out in front of a tanker. I will remember the spirit of those students that were killed there because they wanted a China that was free. I will never forget them. They carried the symbol of freedom through that square, the Statue of Liberty. Chinese leaders will not acknowlegd their deaths but, their deaths are grived by many like me. I am a Messianic Christian and I have been saddended over the way the Communist leadership treats its citizens. Recently on Touched By an Angel there was a segment on China. It told of the fate of dissidents. If caught, prison and death were their future. This was only a story but, the story of many people who want to live in a free land. The story of suffering one goes through for something that is worth it. I would like to apologize to those souls that suffer because the United States legislators see dollar signs and forget the human suffering at the cost of trade with no human rights conditions. I am ashamed of my President. He was bought for a price and the price was a victorious election with Chinese money. I pray for China and the people. Don't lose hope. God is good. Sin does not go unpunished especially when it causes the death of innocent people. Shalom Connie

There are many repressive goverments around the world, but what makes China's situation so egregious is the US's enthusiastic support of the government. China sure is a huge market, but at what cost do we bend over backwards for american big business?

I am really interested in gathering information on human rights (or the lack there of) in China. I have a huge paper coming up and i was really interested in covering this topic. On top of that everybody in the world saw what happened in China in 1989, but it seems that not many people know what has happened since.
