Hunger Strike for the Release of Yang Jianli and
Democracy in China

June 1, 2004
Washington, DC
1989 Student leader Arthur Junguo Liu has started a four day hunger strike
in front of the Chinese Embassy in Washington D.C. for the Release of Yang
Jianli and for democracy in China Today. He is joined by Yang Jian Li’s 75
years old mother and third sister.
As the President of the Guangzhou Patriotic Student Union in 1989, Arthur
Liu was on the top of the wanted list by the Chinese Government after the June
4 massacre in Beijing. He escaped from China and is currently a practicing
attorney in California.
Arthur Liu said that he is deeply saddened and outraged by the sentencing
of his good friend Yang Jian Li to five years imprisonment by the Chinese
government. The purpose of his hunger strike is to call for the immediate
release of Yang Jian Li, Wang Bingzhang and all political prisoners in China.

Furthermore, he hopes that his Hunger Strike can draw the attention of the American
People to the continuous human rights violation by the Chinese Government. He hopes
that China can become free and democratic and basic human rights are protected in
China. Arthur Liu will be joined by numerous student leaders from 1989 and Yang
Jian Li’s family in his four day Hunger Strike.

Other hunger strikers: Yang Jianguo, Dr. Yang's Mother and Ms. Gao Lifang from
Free China Movement.
