Chinese dissident accused of helping colleague

A human rights group based in Hongkong says the Chinese authorities have brought charges against a dissident for helping one of his colleagues leave the country.

The monitoring organisation said Fan Yiping had been arrested in the southern city of Guangzhou and was formally accused last week of helping another democracy activist, Wang Xizhe, escape to Hongkong in 1996.

The organisation said Mr Fan could face up to five years in prison on conviction.
