[CND, 6/15/95] On Saturday, June 10th, about 50 people gathered at Harvard University to discuss the 1989 Chinese student democracy movement and how to further promote democracy in China. Held at Yenching Library, the more than two hours long meeting included a time for brief speeches by featured speakers, a time for questions and answers and brief comments by the audience. The speakers included FENG Congde, LIAN Shengde, GUO Luoji, HU Ping, BAI Meng as well as moderator YANG Jianli. The discussion was lively at times, especially in regard to the past responsibility of the student leaders, and particularly in regard to the evacuation from Tiananmen Square. There emerged a clear difference of opinions with respect to this point, especially between BAI Meng, who defended the student leadership at the time, and HU Ping, who was critical of the decision not to abandon the Square. There was also some mention of the upcoming municipal elections in 6 key cities in China in 1998 by WANG Juntao and YANG Jianli, and the speakers saw this as a positive sign for the future of democracy in China and encouraged public participation in these future elections.
