South Korea will back end
of sanctions against North

President Kim Dae-jung of South Korea said today that Seoul would
support any move by Washington to ease or abandon U.S. sanctions
against North Korea but would not make such a request itself.

Despite the announcement, the president said South Korea's policies
toward the North had not changed.

Kim leaves for a nine-day state visit to the United States on
Saturday.  North Korea and South Korea's economic crisis are
expected to top his agenda.

MORE TESTS?  Pakistan's military appears to be preparing to test
fire one of its short-range missiles, a move that could further
undermine efforts to avert an arms race in South Asia, a senior
Clinton administration official said Thursday.  The missile has a
range of 250 to 375 miles, and, if it is test launched, would be
armed with a dummy warhead or no warhead.

wreath at the site.
