Washington, Jan. 8 (CNA) A group of pro-democracy activists from mainland China and members of local human rights groups and Taiwanese expatriate communities in the United States staged a demonstration in front of the Beijing Embassy in Washington, D.C. Saturday, urging the international community to join forces to defend human rights in the new year. Representatives from about 40 different groups, including the Free China Movement, gathered on the avenue in front of the mainland Chinese embassy to participate in the demonstration staged by the Epoch Times, waving placards that read "Say bye-for-good to China." Wei Jingsheng, an exiled mainland Chinese pro-democracy activist, who lives in exile, said it is time for the Chinese people to wake up and say goodbye to the Chinese Communist Party. He added that the communist regime has been persecuting the people on the mainland for many years. Nieh Sen, director of the branch office of the Epoch Times in Washington, D.C., said that the activity was organized to echo a joint campaign launched by more than 60 civic groups around the world.
