China Jails Man for Democracy Newsletter -US Group

BEIJING (Reuters) - China has sentenced a lawyer in southern Hunan province to three years in jail for distributing a newsletter from an overseas pro-democracy Web site, a U.S. human rights group said on Sunday.

Police arrested Zhu Ruixiang, a lawyer in Shaoyang city, in May for forwarding by e-mail a U.S.- based newsletter to 12 people, the Free China Movement said in a statement.

U.S.-based Chinese VIP Reference (http://www.bignews.org/) says it sends out a daily newsletter that millions receive.

Zhu was formerly an editor at a Shaoyang radio station and the Shaoyang Broadcasting and Television newspaper, the group said.

He also participated in the 1989 pro-democracy movement.

Shaoyang officials could not be reached for comment.
